Cozy gaming has gained traction over the years, especially with the stressors of in our current, hyperconnected world.
In an era defined by endless notifications, algorithmic feeds, and a seemingly unending stream of bad news, it’s no surprise that many players have gravitated toward games that emphasize comfort, creativity, and community instead.
- Rather than asking us to save the world or climb a leaderboard, cozy games invite us to slow down, pay attention, and find meaning in small, everyday moments.
I’ve always loved games like Animal Crossing for this reason. And, in April of 2026, I found another cozy game to love — Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.
Beneath its quirky humor and laid-back gameplay, this game revolves around community, making it feel not only cozy, but quietly meaningful.
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.
An installment of the Tomodachi Life series, this game revolves around you having an island where you create Miis, Nintendo’s avatar characters.
They offer several customization options, from gender (this game includes nonbinary characters and they/them pronouns) to skin tone to sexuality and personality. This allows you to make your favorite characters or someone you know in real life. Then, your Mii lives on your island.
The goal of Tomodachi Life is to take care of your Miis and foster friendships between them. This includes:
- Feeding them when they’re hungry
- Getting them outfits they like
- Helping them make friends with other Miis, and even date or get married.
In other words, the game’s objective is the definition of cozy gaming.
Inclusion
One of the biggest appeals of Tomodachi Life is how customizable your Miis are. Unlike previous games in the series, this game lets you create queer Miis who can enter queer relationships.
That, along with various skin tone options, makes this game feel inclusive in a way many games don’t. You can see yourself and your friends in the Miis you create, and that fosters a sense of belonging that adds to the cozy feel.
The Charm of the Miis
Another appeal of the game is that the Miis are simply adorable. They approach life with a childlike sincerity, celebrating small connections and everyday experiences.
- A Mii might excitedly ask whether they’re friends with someone now because they discovered they both like the same thing.
- Others come to you for advice on whether they should change their hairstyle, confess their feelings to a crush, or mend a disagreement with a friend.
- They sometimes sneak up on other Miis or chase them around the island.
This childlike behavior easily endears you to them, once again giving the game a cozy feel.
Even the game’s conflicts are mostly lighthearted in nature. Miis might not get along because they don’t have the same hobbies or dislike each other’s catchphrase. It’s very silly.
At the same time, it reflects real life. We don’t always get along with people, and we have to work through those feelings and conflicts. This gently reinforces soft life skills like communication and conflict resolution, but in cozy, whimsical setting.
There’s more to Tomodachi Life than that, but those are just a few aspects of what makes the game so popular. People fill their islands with Miis based on their favorite fictional characters, their friends and family, or even exaggerated versions of themselves. They invent silly catchphrases, form unlikely friendships, and create moments of simple fun.
What unites these experiences is a spirit of playfulness and goodwill. Players are simply enjoying the absurd, heartwarming stories that emerge from their island communities.
Cozy Gaming With a Purpose
Games like Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream show you how simple gaming, and life, can be:
- Miis don’t have jobs or obligations outside of making friends, eating, getting dressed, and just living life.
- It reminds us that the essence of life is to simply live and enjoy what’s around us, something that’s easy to forget with our day-to-day stressors.
Life is meant to be fun. We’re meant to connect with others, fall in love (or not), to truly live, and just live life. It’s a great reminder of the importance of living in the moment and how that helps you enjoy the time you have as you live.
During a time of political turmoil Tomodachi Life offers a refreshing look at what life can look like when we remember to slow down and connect with the world and people around us.
